Chingford Fruit Limited has received its first arrivals of the Indian fresh speciality mango Banganpalli for the UK market.

The mangoes are believed to be the first of their type to hit the UK and is relatively large in size for a speciality product at 350-500g.

The company has worked on the project for a two years before commencing with export after ensuring the quality and infrastructure was in place.

The product is grown in the Chitoor region, East of Bangalore and has a short season of six weeks before the monsoon season begins.

Traditional land laws in the region mean that the groves tend to be small in size and the community will work as a co-operative in the future as the market develops.

According to Chingford, Banganpalli does not suffer from ‘spongy’ flesh which can be an issue with the more traditional speciality mango, Alfonso.

Dr Sarah Taylor of Chingford Fruit Ltd said: “The Banganpalli is a real crowd pleaser with its bright yellow skin, vibrant orange flesh, and it is bursts with citrus and peach flavours - it just melts in your mouth.

“I first came across this particular variety of fibreless mango several years ago when working in the Andhra Pradesh region of South East India. Initially working with a single farmer, it is now set to become a community project as the size of the groves increase. We have won over the communities in the Chittoor region and we are very positive with regard to the future.”

British & Brazilian accounts director Mark Moody told freshinfo: “There will be limited volume this year with several airfreight departures over the next three to four weeks and seafreight arrivals in July.

“Early indications have been very positive with excellent quality - both visual and eating quality.”
