The European Banana Action Network, Euroban claimed in a statement today that for more than eight of its 10 years the EU's banana import regime has been challenged under international trade rules that have forced its reform.

The coalition of NGOs in 12 different European countries has warned that large multinationals and supermarkets have taken the majority of profits from the managed market and that growers and workers have seen few benefits.

'As we move towards the threatened dismantling of EU import quotas, Euroban and its partners in producer countries insist on the need for all the actors to come together urgently to seek international agreement on putting the trade on a sustainable footing for the long term, in order to avert the dire consequences of a deregulated banana economy,' said a spokesperson.
