The banana float at last year's Notting Hill Carnival

Pressure group Banana Link and trade union Usdaw are backing the cause of Caribbean banana producers again at the Notting Hill Carnival over the last weekend of August in London. The organisations are creating a Caribbean banana float and will hand out postcards and stickers to carnival-goers. They hop to urge people to press the UK government for a fair-trade platform for Caribbean bananas in the face of changes to the EU banana import regime due to come into effect next year.

"This is our last chance to save the life-blood of our islands," said Renwick Rose, co-ordinator of the Windward Islands Farmers' Association. "We have the support of our governments, of our industry, of Latin American workers and now we need the support of the British consumer to reverse this EU decision. The so-called tariff-only banana import policy would be the straw that breaks the camel's back."
