Bananas have been ostracised from school dinner menus at a school in Wigan amid fears from the local council that it is ignoring nutrition.
Bananas were taken off the menu by caterer MetroFresh, which claims they are too expensive, while peppers were removed as they are currently of “too poor” quality.
But independent councillor Gary Wilkes has expressed concerns to the local media that children at the school will not be getting required amounts of fruit and veg as a result. He has written to the director of the Local Education Authority to address the issue.
Some 97 per cent of Wigan’s schools currently have healthy school status under the national scheme.
