Thousands of bananas were washed up on two Dutch North Sea islands yesterday, after several containers fell into the water from the ship Duncan Island on Tuesday.

At least one of the containers - some of which were empty, some of which contained bananas - burst open, releasing thousands of bunches of unripe bananas, which washed up on to a half-mile stretch of beach on Terschelling island, 70 miles north of Amsterdam, as well as neighbouring Ameland island.

“I think everybody on the island has a bunch now,” said Gossen Buren, a shipping official at the local lighthouse.

“Your ordinary Terschelling resident will probably have a look, but it is not clear if the bananas are edible,” said a spokesperson.

The municipality is reportedly in talks with the ship’s insurance company and the department of public works and water management to decide what to do with the remaining fruit.
