Portsmouth Commercial Port has secured additional volumes of bananas to be shipped into the port by Fyffes.

The new service strengthens Fyffes' commitment to the port, and will increase the amount of bananas coming into the UK through Portsmouth by 15 per cent.

The first ship of the new volume, New Breeze, will arrive for discharge on June 18 from Belize, carrying approximately 600 to 700 pallets. This service will follow on a weekly basis, and it is anticipated the volume will increase each week with predictions of 1,200 to 1,500 pallets a ship.

Fyffes has recently undergone changes with regard to its container shipments of bananas from Belize and Guatemala, and as a result will resume shipping of bananas by conventional ships.

Port manager Martin Putman said: “This is good news for the port and Portsmouth’s position as a major fruit importer. With the current volumes of imported bananas coming into the UK, it firmly establishes Portsmouth as the UK's number-one banana port.”
