According to the retail statistics specialist, more than half of all bananas are eaten by people in the over-45 age range. Adult women are the biggest consumers of bananas accounting for almost half the entire tonnage eaten in the UK

The figures, which are based on food and drink diaries kept by 11,000 children and adults in the UK showed that most bananas are eaten on a Monday - which has become a traditional day for healthy eating. Around 36 per cent of the UK’s banana consumption is accounted for by men and kids take up just 16 per cent of the total.

Organic varieties enjoyed a 3.7 per cent upturn although people ate 1.7 per cent fewer bananas than the previous year.

And the figures also showed that a quarter of all our banana consumption is at breakfast-time and a further 17 per cent are enjoyed at home for lunch.
