Products on the shelves at Pret

Sandwich chain Pret A Manger has unveiled annual sales of more than £500 million for the first time.

Pret, which has more than 350 outlets, said growing demand for healthy lunches was boosting business.

The firm's chief executive, Clive Schlee, told The Guardian its best-selling products last year were porridge and bananas and that the company now sells more cold-pressed vegetable juices than club sandwiches.

The chain, which founded in London in 1986, said sales climbed 15 per cent to £510 million last year, pushing profits up 9 per cent to £67 million.

Increasing numbers of customers want to eat on site, so Pret is apparently planning to shut smaller takeaway outlets and opening larger ones with seating. Last year it opened 40 new outlets, 26 of which were in the UK.
