The European Commission has moved to quash press rumours that it has made a new proposal to Latin American banana producers over its import regime for the fruit.

A spokesman for the commission told FPJ: “There has been no fresh proposal yet. Negotiations with Latin American producer countries are ongoing at the WTO in Geneva. We are continuing to look for a negotiated solution that works for producers from African-Caribbean-Pacific countries, as well as from Europe and Latin America.”

Press reports last week had suggested that the commission had proposed lowering its import tariff on bananas from Latin American countries to €114 (£101) a tonne by 2019, instead of 2016.
