Banana mediator named

The World Trade Organisation’s Hong Kong round ended last week with an agreement between the European Union and Latin American banana exporting nations at last.

The banana import tariff of €176 a tonne will become operational in 10 days on 1 January 2006 and the EU has agreed to put in place a mediator who will watch development of the banana market.

Norwegian trade minister Johannes Store has been chosen to fill the new role given his neutral status with regard to the EU banana trade.

Preferential access for ACP countries has been maintained.
