Banana import licenses repealed

The European Commission has scrapped the need for a licence to import bananas as of 1 January 2012.

It has said new and more accurate means of monitoring imports of bananas have been developed that are less cumbersome than licences.

It has also noted that licences require a great deal of paperwork and cause expense for companies and national administrations.

This has lead to the EU ruling it will remove the need for a licence to import bananas of any origin from the start of next year.
