Caribbean banana campaigners are set to join forces aboard floats at the Notting Hill Carnival this weekend.
They will be handing out bananas, stickers and flyers to encourage people to choose Caribbean and Fair Trade bananas.
The move is prompted by the changes to the EU banana regime, which producers say threatens their livelihood, leaving them unable to compete with cheaper Latin American producers.
Renwick Rose, coordinator of the Association of Caribbean Farmers, said: “This is the last chance to save the life-blood of our islands and we need the support of the British consumer to reverse this EU decision.”
Rose added: “Carnival is an important form of cultural expression for Caribbean people at home and abroad. What better way to illustrate the prospects - and problems - for the future of the Caribbean banana industry and Fair Trade.”
