Banana aid not "permanent"

The Panamanian government has put its hand in its pocket to the tune of $7 million so far to help beleaguered banana co-op Coosemupar over its dispute with marketer Chiquita. Reynaldo Rivera, director of the employment office of the labour ministry, confirmed last week that the government would continue to support the co-op, but that it could not continue to indefinitely. “The government cannot subsidise this sector permanently,” he said. He also confirmed that so far revised price-per-box proposals from Chiquita have not been accepted by workers’ unions at the co-op.
