Baccini Ortofrutta is happy to stick with the European market and let others look to China, according to director, Aurelio Baccini.

“We prefer to be focused on the European market," Baccini said. "Our efforts are in looking for high quality and high prices.”

And while some Italian companies may be trying to expand their offerings, Baccini claimed the company is intending to reduce its varietal range.

He said: “We are trying to reduce the number of varieties to be more specialised in a few products to be in a better position for markets like the UK.

“Our aim is to maintain the Italian style which is not just being a service for a product but to control the production directly, not through a marketing agent.”

Baccini has become part of a consortium, the Baccini Ortofrutta Group, to add value to the fruit produced in the Emilia Romagna region.

The company has also joined forces with producers in Spain, North Africa, South Africa and South America and produces some 50,000 tonnes of various fruits and vegetables.

While the Baccini Group intends to continue its focus on Europe, Baccini said he has planned a trip to China for later this year.

He said: “We are planning to visit in September to look at the possibility of the Chinese market to see what they want in terms of quality and quantity, and see if there is a place for us.”
