British Airways World Cargo (BAWC) and Christian Salvesen have jointly won a prestigious award to endorse their perishables operation at London Heathrow.

Now in their seventh year, the European Supply Chain Excellence Awards are considered to be one of the most keenly fought competitions in the sector.

Shortlisted alongside BBC Resources, NHS Logistics Authority and Celexor, it was the judges' unanimous decision to vote BAWC and Christian Salvesen as winners in the Service, Utility and Public Sector category.

Gerry Mundy, BAWC's global perishables manager, said: “Gone are the days when ëproduce' was regarded as merely a belly-filler for a 747. A major trend has seen shelf-ready packs produced at source enabling importers to use our facility as a consolidation and distribution centre to the UK retailers.”

Brian Gaunt, managing director UK at Christian Salvesen, added: “BA World Cargo's new marketing slogan for its product range is 'Cargo made Simple' and this sums up what BA and Salvesen are achieving with the airfreight perishables supply chain for BA customers in the UK ñ fast and simple processes that deliver cargo quicker than ever before.”

The judges highlighted the way in which “BAWC and Christian Salvesen had got to grips with a supply chain that they do not, of course, own, to the extent of having their own people in places like Ghana”, and they were also impressed by “how the organisation has been able to adapt, and to reach high service levels, while still making good profits”.
