Families are feeling the pinch

Families are on average £8 a week worse off than they were last year, says new research from Asda.

Although average earnings have risen by £23 a week over the last 12 months, according to The Press Association, the typical family has six per cent less disposable income after paying for essential bills and other outgoings.

The latest figures come as research shows consumers have seen their monthly outgoings rise by 26 per cent during the last two years.

The Asda research, carried out by the centre for economics and business research, found the average family has an income of £633 a week, but National Insurance and tax bills have soared by 6.5 per cent to £129 a week during the same period.

Spend on essentials has been driven by a 7.9 per cent leap in food prices, along with utility bills and transport.
