Aussie avos arrive in UK

History was made this week with the arrival of a sea container of Queensland-grown Hass avocados at Felixstowe.

Halls International director Paul Devlin said he had made detailed arrangements with Australian growers’ organisation Sunfresh over the past 10 months, to make this breakthrough possible.

He said: “We have developed a strong relationship with the prominent Australian Sunshine State growers and now can place more than 20 tonnes of the high-quality Australian fruit into our UK and European outlets. The wholly natural process to keep the fruit clean, green and sound on arrival has been an outstanding success.”

Sunfresh chairman Tom French and its chief marketing officer Mark Johnston were present at the opening of the container yesterday.

French said: “The fruit was carefully selected and packed so as to ensure that the specific requirements of the EU markets and the high standards that Halls International insists upon were met. We are delighted with the condition of the fruit after a substantial sea voyage from Australia and have every confidence that the quality will meet the very stringent demands of the EU consumers.”
