Clearly the way the new levy structure is shaping up is not going down well with a number of growers (pages 1 and 6).

There is an ever-more audible outpouring of fear that the well-managed system that has been in place for horticulture in recent times is about to be cast aside in favour of a stucture within which horticulture’s voice is lost.

One of the big fears is that smaller growers simply will not be well served by the new structure. Another theory is that larger growers could become weary of reduced R&D spending - if it comes to that - and club together to form their own research centres. Again, to the detriment of smaller firms.

It’s all very well for those who back the levy re-structuring to tell growers to ‘wait and see’ or stop doom-mongering, but it is natural when there seems a pretty unclear plan for the future to assume the worst.

There is still a huge amount we do not know about how Levy Board UK will function, how the sector companies will interact, and how much independence horticulture will retain.

Until we know more, growers are understandably going to be worried.
