ASF introduces pulp-based punnets

Good Natured Fruit-branded soft fruit is to get a boost when it is sold in 100 per cent recyclable, pulp-based punnets.

Scotland-based grower Angus Soft Fruits has introduced the environment-conscious packaging to reflect the values of the fruit, which is produced without pesticides.

The new recyclable punnet is made from wholly sustainable components, including recycled industrial waste cardboard that is safe for direct food contact but would otherwise go to landfill.

A printed board sleeve featuring a clear film window made from wood pulp from ethically sourced forests allows shoppers to see the fruit inside.

The pack is also fully biodegradable and compostable.

Lochy Porter, managing director of ASF, said: “We initially set ourselves the task of finding a way to grow strawberries and raspberries that would eliminate the use of pesticides in 2004. Successful trials in 2006 led to the Good Natured Fruit method of growing that we use today.

“Once we had achieved these goals we looked towards the packaging of our Good Natured Fruit. We strived to develop this aspect of our brand to mirror the values of environmentalism and consumer confidence in our packaging, as well that of the actual Good Natured Fruit it contains. We are very proud of the results we have achieved.”

The packs of strawberries and raspberries are now available in all major Sainsbury’s and Asda stores, and selected Co-operative stores.
