Asda trials "dual measurement system"

Asda began trialling what it has dubbed a “dual measurement system” on strawberries on Monday.

The Yorkshire retailer is offering 453g of strawberries marked up as 1lb punnets, Andy Jackson, Asda’s strawberry buyer, said: “We have had a steady stream of shoppers asking us to put imperial measurements back on packs as they are still confused with how much they get in grams.

"We have taken the common-sense approach and are trialling putting pounds and ounces back on our strawberries this summer season and see what the response is. No one wants to order a litre of beer in the pub, so why do we have to buy 453.39g of strawberries?”

Asda’s own research found that 70 per cent of its customers got confused with metric weights and said they would prefer products to be labelled in clear pounds and half pounds.

And 20 per cent of customers said they took longer to shop as they take time to work out the conversion to imperial measurement.
