Asda to strip fruit and veg

Fresh fruit and vegetables at Asda are to shed their plastic packaging next week as part of a trial that could revolutionise the way produce is sold.

The Wal-Mart-owned supermarket will remove all packaging from most of the fresh produce at two stores in north-west England and, if shoppers are not put off, the strategy could be extended to all 316 stores across the UK.

The company has also pledged to cut all packaging by 25 per cent this year.

Around 60 per cent of fresh produce sold by supermarket chains is pre-packed, according to Asda.

The trial will see wrapping removed from 60 fresh produce lines, including carrots, broad beans and courgettes.

But more fragile items such as raspberries will remain packed.

An Asda spokeswoman said: “We believe this return to traditional values could have a huge impact upon the amount of packaging thrown away every day. We believe our customers would prefer to shop in this traditional way if it means reducing waste and protecting our environment.”
