Asda to open 18 new stores

UK number-two retailer Asda has announced plans to open 18 superstores and 10 non-food Asda Living stores in the next year in a move that will generate 8,000 new jobs.

The Wal-Mart-owned store will also extend and improve 15 of its existing stores.

Asda chief financial officer Judith McKenna said: “This is a major investment which will enable Asda to provide even better service and great value products to more people across the UK than ever before.”

More than 4,000 jobs will be created by the new store building program, according to the retailer, with an additional 2,000 roles through a program providing extra help during peak trading periods and a further 2,000 jobs created through organic growth across the company.

Plans for new stores have been confirmed in Girvan in South Ayrshire, Ardrossan in North Ayrshire, Folkestone, Wishaw in North Lanarkshire, Tonypandy in Mid Glamorgan, Highbridge in Somerset, Seaham in County Durham and Walsall.

Asda opened 25 new stores last year, which created 7,000 new jobs.
