Asda is to create 7,000 new jobs this year.
The Wal-Mart-owned retailer is planning to open 14 new stores and expand 15 existing locations in 2009.
Nine new food stores and five non-food stores - under the Asda Living banner - will take on 4,000 staff. The internet shopping business at Asda.com will create another 2,000 jobs, and a further 1,000 are expected to be absorbed due to natural expansion.
Asda ceo Andy Bond said: “This year we will create 7,000 new jobs at a time when many companies are having to lay people off.
“We will also be helping 3,000 long-term unemployed get back into work by specifically targeting them for existing vacancies in our business.”
Steve Gates, managing partner of The Gap Partnership, said:
“As the recession continues to bite, good news from Asda offers a glimmer of hope to crumbling retailers...
"In recent months, retailers with a clear price message have done exceptionally well as cost-conscious consumers look to save cash. By working to solve their traditionally frosty relationships with suppliers, retailers have negotiated new discounter brands which have proved a hit. But to retain market share, Asda will have to continue to collaborate and negotiate creatively with its suppliers."
This offers a brief respite for the UK economy and the unemployed.”
