Asda stocks branded Cornish potatoes

Asda is stocking a branded Cornish potato exclusively this year.

Mark and Ed Rowe, third generation farmers from Helston in Cornwall, are harvesting early Cornish New potatoes, branded exclusively for Asda as Cornish Crystals.

The potatoes hit Asda shelves on Thursday, making them the one of earliest UK mainland potatoes on supermarket shelves.

The land’s southerly location, fertile soil, and the benefits of the Gulf Stream Cornwall has given the Rowes a significant competitive edge over other growing areas, enabling the crop to be two weeks earlier than elsewhere in the UK.

The very earliest Cornish potatoes are grown on south facing coastal slopes to take advantage of milder climatic conditions and maximum sunlight hours to bring these new season potatoes to maturity as early as possible.

The Rowe Family - who farm 2500 acres of land - will be harvested at dawn and delivered to depot the following day to maximise the freshness.

QV Foods’ Asda commercial manager Mark Allmond said: “It is has been a great opportunity for QV Foods to work with fantastic farming family in Mark and Ed Rowe on such an exciting project. The opportunity to bring Cornish Crystals exclusively to Asda this early in the season and for the first time has taken a lot of hard work and effort throughout the supply chain and we look forward to building on this in the seasons to come.”
