A £21 million bonus has been shared out among 127,000 Asda shop floor and depot staff.

The Wal-Mart-owned chain gave the bonus the go-ahead to mark the end of another successful 12 months. It will be paid in tomorrow's February pay packet.

The average employee will take home an extra £227.50 each this month.

Asda chief executive Andy Bond said the record payment was partly the result of the store's "best ever" festive season, which included its busiest ever trading day on December 10.

He said: "Once again, it's the hard work and enthusiasm of our colleagues that has made the business such a success this year.

"It's only fair that we share the rewards with all the colleagues who helped make it happen."
