Supermarket offered its lowest-ever prices as it went head to head with the discounters
Asda was selling vegetables at the chain’s lowest-ever price of 15p in the run up to Christmas.
From 20-26 December, the supermarket was offering 1kg of carrots (usually 60p), 500g of sprouts (usually £1), 360g of broccoli (usually 75p) and 500g of parsnips (usually 65p) for just 15p, both online and in stores.
The move meant Asda matched both Aldi and Lidl’s prices on shelf, and continues the longstanding price war between the traditional ‘big four’ supermarkets and the discounters.
Asda noted that it topped The Grocer magazine’s festive price comparison survey, which tracked the cost of 33 premium Christmas products.
Kris Comerford, Asda’s chief commercial officer, said: “Throughout the year we have been focussed on improving the quality of our products while continuing to keep prices in check for customers.
“This is especially important at Christmas when family budgets are under extra pressure and we are confident that our customers will be able to treat themselves to the best quality festive food and drink without having to break the bank when they shop at Asda.”
