Asda seeks Leics growers

Asda and its regional food hub Springfield Fine Foods are searching for producers to supply fresh produce for their ‘Good’n’Local’ brand, based in the Midlands.

The range covers produce from within 30 miles of the hub, which is near Hinckley in Leicestershire, but Springfield has been having difficulties finding local fruit and vegetable growers who are prepared to supply the hub.

David Rose, Springfield’s manager, was reported as saying: “Eggs and cheeses are selling well, but we are struggling to find local producers to supply vegetables”.

Rose said that Springfield can help small businesses who would not otherwise have the resources to get into Asda on their own.

"It's a mammoth task getting all the producers accredited and getting packaging, labelling and bar-coding sorted out," he said.

However, he did warn that supplying Asda may not be the best solution for all growers.

"Not everyone will be better off supplying Asda. We can't promise a better price than they would get elsewhere, but we can offer higher volume and lower marketing and distribution costs.”
