Asda won the prestigious BBC Food & Farming award for best national or regional retailer at last week’s BBC Good Food show in Birmingham.

The awards are organised by Radio 4’s Food Programme and this year Asda was nominated by UK shoppers and shortlisted alongside Waitrose and Bristol-based specialist independent retail chain Stokes.

It is the second year in a row that Asda has been shortlisted for the award, only narrowly missing out last year to regional supermarket Booths.

Judges on the panel included: Sir Don Curry, chairman of the government’s Sustainable Farming & Food Strategy Implementation Group, Kath Dalmeny, policy & campaigns officer with The Food Commission, and Raymond Blanc, chef, author and proprietor of Michelin-starred Le Manoir aux Quat’Saison.

Chris Brown, Asda’s agriculture strategy manager, was delighted with the award. “It’s a real honour to collect this award and a testament to all of the hard work our farmer suppliers have put in,” he said. “Together we have expanded our ranges and delivered great, British food to millions of customers each week.”
