Asda sales rose by £1bn in 2006

Accounts filed this weekend at Companies House show a sales rise of close to £1 billion at Asda in 2006.

And the Daily Telegraph this morning reports that “customers flocked back to the chain”, to bring about the impressive increase.

Sales increased to £15.7bn, up from £14.8bn the year before, in the year to December 31 2006. Pre-tax profit rose from £572m to £593m.

The newspaper quotes the filing as saying: "2006 was a year of recovery for the group. The improvement in the performance during the year was a result of executing a customer focused strategy."

Profits, however, remain below to the £629m pre-tax profit reported in 2004, prior to the appointment of incumbent chief executive Andy Bond.

The salary of the highest-paid director, which is probably Bond, increased from £406,000 to £691,000.
