UK retailer Asda has announced a £700 million investment in online, new and existing stores as part of a new focus on “multichannel” business.

The supermarket this week reported 2012 sales of £22.8m, including petrol, which represents a 4.5 per cent year-on-year increase. Chief executive Andy Clarke pointed to the strategy of holding down the price of essential items and new opportunities for customers to shop as key reasons behind the growth.

“By focusing on [customers'] needs through accelerating our investment in the technology and infrastructure to make shopping more convenient, they can shop for what they want, when they want it,” said Clarke.

The Walmart-owned supermarket reported double-digit growth in online sales, pointing out that it had increased its home-shopping capacity with the opening of a third pupose-built picking centre in Nottingham last month.

It has also claimed a world first with the establishment of a new ‘drive thru’ Click & Collect facility in York.

Clarke also revealed Asda will open 10 new stores, including four small format supermarkets, five superstores and one non-food outlet.
