Asda overtakes Sainsbury's

Figures based on till rolls from retail analyst TNS show that Asda has overtaken Sainsbury's to take the second largest share of the UK grocery retail market.

The data from TNS showed that Asda overtook Sainsbury's for the first time ever in the four weeks to July 20. The Wal-Mart subsidiary's share increased to 17 per cent from 16.1 while Sainsbury's fell to 16.2 per cent from 17.1 per cent for the same period a year ago.

Tesco's share remained unchallenged at 27 per cent as the battle for second place has intensified.

Some industry commentators forecast the scales could tip back in favour of Sainsbury's later in the year once it re-launches its non-food offer. Asda's gains have mainly been in this area.
