Asda has launched what it claims is the “world’s first” red and yellow stripy pepper which is said to have higher levels of vitamin C and a sweeter taste than traditional varieties.
Developed by Dutch pepper grower 4Evergreen over the past seven years, the new pepper, marketed as the Asda Extra Special Stripy Pepper, is now available in Asda stores priced at £1 each.
Its unique characteristics, other than its stripy colour, include its solid middle of sprouts and bulbs, meaning it weighs more than a traditional pepper and provides consumers with more to cook with.
It is also grown over a longer period, and requires less fertiliser and water than other varieties, Asda said.
Asda fresh produce manager, Charlie Mills, said: “We take great pride in being the only supermarket to stock striped peppers. After working with the grower for seven years to cultivate this unique product, it’s great to see them finally hit shelves.
“Whether you’re looking for a healthy option to satisfy your sweet tooth, or innovative ways to jazz up mealtimes, the Extra Special Stripy Pepper is a fantastic addition to Asda’s fresh produce range, which all the family can enjoy.”
The stripy pepper began as a natural mutation, before being developed into a new variety available for commercial production.
