Asda integration of Netto leads to record market share

Asda’s full integration of its Netto stores has led it to an all-time record 17.9 market share and year-on-year growth of 7.8 per cent, Kantar Worldpanel figures show.

The latest grocery share statistics show the market grew at 4.0 per cent in the 12 weeks to 18 March, remaining 5.5 per cent below the grocery inflation rate.

Kantar Worldpanel said this means shoppers are being forced to take advantage of offers and choose their purchases carefully to manage their own “personal” inflation.

Edward Garner, director at Kantar Worldpanel, said Asda’s 17.9 per cent share for 12 weeks to 18 March makes “particularly good reading” for the retailer.

Its 7.8 per cent year-on-year growth rate is “leading the big four”, largely thanks to fully incorporating Netto, he said.

“Elsewhere, Tesco’s growth rate of 2.7 per cent still lags behind the market and results in a drop in share. However, it is an improvement on the growth rates seen so far this year," Garner added.

Both Sainsbury’s and Morrisons’ shares remain unchanged from the same period last year.

Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl continue to out-perform the market, particularly so in the case of Aldi with year-on-year growth of 28.5 per cent, Kantar Worldpanel said.
