Asda growth continues

Asda has revealed that its sales growth is outpacing many of its rivals.

The group, which overtook Sainsbury's to become the country's second largest supermarket last month, has reported that food sales have been strong, growing by high single digits at comparable stores in its second quarter.

Mark Hughes, food analyst at Numis Securities, said: “Everyday low pricing is working very well for Asda and others like Tesco and Morrison's.”

Only Morrison's challenges Asda's rate of growth. The chain, which is considerably smaller than the “big four”, reported underlying sales up 8.4 per cent in its latest update.
