Asda aims to double the size of its home shopping service this year to increase its competitiveness with Tesco.

Asda said its asda.com home delivery service is being extended to cover 60 per cent of the UK by the end of this year.

More than £7 million has been invested in the operation recently.

"In the past 12 months we've focussed heavily on improving the usability of the service," said director of Asda e-commerce, David Rutley.

"As a result, customer satisfaction scores have taken a big leap and customer retention rates have also made big steps forward."

Around one-third of UK households had access to its online shopping service last year.
