Asda won the retail race to get the first new-season cucumbers grown in Yorkshire into stores across the region this week.

Asda supplier English Village Salads (EVS) planted the first crop about eight weeks ago and has spent the last few days picking the first flush of this year’s harvest.

EVS procurement manager Patrick Bromwich said: “Despite the poor light levels, the care and attention that our growers have given the plants has ensured that we were able to start a few days early.”

Heather Rhodes, produce manager at Asda York, said: “We are delighted to be the first to give [our customers] the chance to buy not only British cucumbers, but ones that have actually been grown locally in Yorkshire.”

Asda expects Yorkshire tomatoes to hit the shelves towards the end of March.
