Asda is expanding its regional and local sourcing initiative and aims to have locally produced sections in all stores.

"We have a commitment to regional sourcing with our recently launched Yorkshire 's Best and Best of Scotland, for example on one level, and on another level , if a store recognizes a local product and they want to stock , they can do that through the team at headquarters," said a spokesman. "We can give the producer support and advice , and if necessary help to expand production."

Carrots have featured in the Best of Scotland offer. Other regions in the Best of programme include the West Country, Wales and the Lake District.

Asda is now working on a Best of Kent range to feature apples and strawberries.

Asda defines local products as those which are made locally, grown locally and reared locally, are a local taste or delicacy and recognised by consumer as locally and for which there is significant customer demand. Products must satisfy at least one from each of these groups of criteria.
