Asda is stocking a new green nectarine sourced from a volcano for the first time.

The stonefruit, exclusively grown for the supermarket, is sourced from the slopes of Mount Etna and have never been exported to the UK, or even Italy, before.

The Sicilian Nectar are green-skinned and high in brix and resembles an oversized greengage plum.

Grower Mario Castorino said: “This is the first time we have sold them outside local markets but we are proud to ship them to the UK. We hope British people love them as much as we do.”

Asda, which is selling the product in 95 stores, added in statement: “We are really excited about them as they are a local secret. This is a connoisseur’s fruit.”

The Extra Special Sicilian Green Nectarines will cost £1.97 for a 400g punnet and went into stores on Wednesday.
