More than 60 per cent of Asda employees will go without a bonus this year after the supermarket chain failed to meet its annual sales targets.

Last year, 94 per cent of Asda’s store staff took home a piece of a £19 million payout pie, but this year intense competition from rival supermarkets means the bonus total will be half that amount.

Just 45,500 - less than 40 per cent of the chain’s 120,000 eligible employees will go without, compared to 113,000 who took home the bonus last year.

Staff working at stores that failed to hit yearly targets did not receive a bonus. Those that work at stores which did achieve targets were given their bonus.

It is thought that management executives, including Andy Bond, will not be taking home a bonus this year either.
