Asda chief handed gong in honours list

Asda chief executive Tony DeNunzio has been honoured by the Queen for services to the retail industry.

DeNunzio is credited as the driving force behind Asda's recent expansion. In the third quarter of 2004, Asda opened four superstores as it stepped up its battle with rivals Tesco and Bradford-based Wm Morrison.

DeNunzio said: "I believe this honour reflects Asda's contribution to retail excellence as well as my work with the government on competitiveness - I feel proud and privileged to receive it."

Asda now has more than 260 stores and 24 depots across Britain and has been part of the US giant Wal-Mart since 1999.
