Asda has welcomed the Competition Commission’s provisional findings out today. John Longworth, executive director at Asda said: “We think it’s significant that the commission has highlighted that planning is restraining competition and is preventing adequate choice and diversity at a local level. A change in the planning system would allow more competition and we strongly believe customers would benefit through lower prices, more choice and better quality.
He also said the enquiry thus far had been very thorough. “The CC has conducted a very detailed investigation into what is an important issue for UK consumers and we look forward to engaging with them in similar detail in the coming remedies phase,” said Longworth. “We welcome their finding that the UK groceries market is delivering a good deal for consumers.”
