Asda has seen its fruit sales shoot through the roof and last week claimed to have sold more fresh fruit than ever before.

According to the retailer, sales of berries were up 62 per cent year-on-year, while tropical fruit has risen 57 per cent year-on-year and sales of prepared fruit have climbed by 53 per cent.

Alison Dakin, produce marketing communications manager, said: “We’ve been listening carefully to our customers over the past year to ensure we are giving them exactly what they want.

“We’ve enhanced our produce offer, introduced different pack sizes to cater for all their needs, and launched our Smartprice range making our fruit and veg even more affordable for customers on a tight budget.”

She said high profile promotions also enhanced sales, linking fresh produce into events such as the launch of The Incredibles on DVD, which she said saw dramatic results.

“We’ve also benefited from the recent trend that has seen more customers opting for healthy snacks.

“When you combine all of this with our famously low prices, you have a winning formula for driving sales of fresh fruit.”

The retailer said sales have been growing all year and it expects the upward trend to continue.
