Government ministers are reported to be considering using the army to stop fuel protestors blockading supermarkets.
Reports in the national media claim the army has been put on stand-by to prevent the retailers from being closed.
The Independent quoted a senior ministerial sources as saying: “We cannot have food and petrol being blockaded and the public understand that.
“We are quite serious about this. Unlike the last time we had the fuel protests, many petrol stations have closed and the supermarkets are a much more important factor. We won’t let them close.”
The army is reported to be planning to use heavy vehicles to remove blockading lorries and anti-terror laws could be used on the protestors, the paper claimed.
