Argentinean blueberry concern

According to Argentinean monthly newspaper Informe Fruithorticola, growers at a recent open day at blueberry grower Vergel SA said the downward trend on prices internationally at the end of the last Argentinean season has left many growers worried about this season’s prospects.

Producers are increasing plantings but they face strong competition from neighbouring Chile and a possible levelling out of supply and demand, the paper reported. Producers are working to improve productivity and enhance post-harvest efficiency, but warn that if international prices fall below $15 (£7.97) a kilo, production will cease to be profitable.
