Cherry production in the Argentinean province of Mendoza is expected to reach 6,240 tonnes this season, according to figures released by IDR, the provincial institute for rural development.

This compares with 7,006t in 2010 and 3,086t in 2009.

Agronomists said the leading variety is Bing and that a harsh winter produced uniform blossom and therefore good fruit set and large sizes.

Most of Mendoza’s cherries are grown in the Uco Valley and the season runs from October until February.
