The pear harvest has started in Argentina with the first eight shipments of fruit already on the water and making their way to Europe, Russia, and the US. Fruit has been on regional export markets such as Brazil for more than two weeks.

Volumes are slightly down on the high volume crop of last year by some 15 per cent. Fruit quality and condition is extremely good, according to the country's chamber of associated fruit growers, CAFI.

The apple harvest is due to start on February 10 and growers are hopeful that a new system for foreign exchange payments will be in place by then so that the sector will be able to purchase any imported inputs required.
