Arab farmers in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights have secured a new customer - Syria.

It is the first time the country has traded with Israeli-controlled territory, and Syria will be taking 10,000 tonnes of apples. In the past, it has observed an Arab League boycott of the Jewish state.

The decision was made after farmers in the region had repeatedly called on the government to buy their produce, the Syrian foreign ministry said.

However, Syria has said it would be a one-off transaction. A spokesman said the fruit was being imported “due to the harsh economic conditions which our brothers in the occupied Golan Heights are suffering from".
