Frosts in Washington state in early May are taking their toll on the apple crop. 'The recent cold weather in north-central Washington will affect our apple crop estimate,' said Tom Swearingen of the Washington Apple Commission referring to the apples for the fresh market. 'I anticipate that our fresh crop size estimate could decrease from about 95 million boxes to about 87 million boxes.' However, official estimates are not due until the summer. Marketing plans are in development for the 2002-03 season, said Swearingen, and other indications are for an 'outstanding crop of Washington apples and a banner year for all varieties, he concluded.
