The European Commission is due to make its decision on September 30 and decide the fate of thousands of tonnes of fruit.

Doug Henderson, chief executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium, said this week that he was hopeful fruit would be placed in the lower 15 per cent duty band, known as Annex 2, which might not even be applied.

He said: 'There have been some major trade concessions backed by a very strong lobby from the trade. We hope apples will be top of the list for exclusion.'
