Norman Collett is to partner Goudhurst Primary School to develop an educational programme focusing on the apple industry, in line with the Plough to Plate initiative.

The scheme will be launched at the National Fruit Show on October 17. So far, 22 schools in Cornwall and Norfolk have been selected to trial a growing, cooking and eating programme for five-to six-year-olds, embracing a wide range of horticultural crops.

Stage two of the project will involve refining plants to four regional specialities in the schools’ area. For more information, visit www.growingforschools.com.

Meanwhile, in Kent, St Nicholas Court is already supporting projects for potatoes, and the crop is even being grown in the playground. The www.itsaspudslife.co.uk website contains more information.
